 Washington D.C., Jan 27, 2021 / 01:30 pm MT (CNA).- In an interview discussing his recent admonition of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco emphasized the need for Catholics to recover the sense of worthiness to receive Holy Communion.

“Catholics no longer understand the idea of worthiness to receive Communion. It’s just seen as a sort of a token gesture of welcome and belonging,” Cordileone told EWTN Pro-Life Weekly in an interview that will air on Thursday night.

The archbishop was addressing the topic of denial of Holy Communion to someone “for the sake of their soul.” He said that Catholics must first understand the Church’s teaching on the Eucharist in order to grasp the significance of the denial of Holy Communion to a public figure.

“For that kind of action [denial of Communion] to make sense to a lot of people, we need to reclaim this sense of what it means to receive [Communion],” Cordileone said, pointing to a lack of belief in the Real Presence of the Eucharist among Catholics.

“What are you really saying when you receive Communion? To me, it goes hand-in-hand with this decline in the belief of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist,” he said.

Archbishop Cordileone was explaining to EWTN his Jan. 21 statement to Speaker Pelosi, a Catholic who hails from the San Francisco archdiocese.

In that statement, Cordileone had said that “No Catholic in good conscience can favor abortion,” referring to Pelosi’s public support in Congress for legal abortion.

Pelosi, on a Jan. 18 podcast with former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, had referred to the issue of abortion as “a woman’s right to choose” and said that Catholics should “love contraception” for reducing the abortion rate.

 Washington D.C., Jan 21, 2021 / 05:00 am MT (CNA).- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi accused pro-lifers of putting their opposition to abortion over the tenets of democracy in a recent appearance on former Sen. Hillary Clinton’s podcast. 

“I think that Donald Trump is president because of the issue of a woman’s right to choose,” Pelosi said on the Jan. 18 episode of “You and Me Both with Hillary Clinton,” blaming pro-life voters for boosting Trump into office. 

“When you take the greed of those who want their tax cuts, that’s probably a small number [of voters], but nonetheless a number,” said Pelosi. Conversely, “then you take the abortion issue--and many of these people are very good people; that’s just their point of view. But they were willing to sell the whole democracy down the river for that one issue.”

Pelosi said that that support for Trump by pro-life religious voters is an issue that “gives me great grief as a Catholic.”

Where does the Church stand on this?

Promoting Abortion

Those Catholics who publicly announce their denial that abortion is always gravely immoral, or who publicly promote abortion, or who publicly argue in favor of legalized abortion, also commit a mortal sin and also incur a sentence of automatic excommunication.

This sentence of excommunication applies to Catholics who are politicians, as well as to those Catholics who are political commentators, or public speakers, or who write or otherwise publicly communicate their erroneous view that abortion can be morally-acceptable or that abortion should be legal. This sentence of excommunication also certainly applies to those Catholics who claim to be theologians or Biblical scholars, but who believe or teach that abortion is not always gravely immoral.

Those Catholics who promote abortion are automatically excommunicated for two reasons. First, they have fallen into the sin of heresy by believing that abortion is not always gravely immoral (canons 751 and 1364). Second, these Catholics are providing substantial assistance for women to obtain abortions by influencing public policy to make abortions legal, and to keep abortions legal, and to broaden access to abortion. Those who provide such substantial assistance commit a mortal sin and incur a sentence of automatic excommunication (canon 1398).

Trump’s own government has warned that the drug should only be administered for Covid-19 in a hospital or research setting due to potentially fatal side effects.
The US House Speaker did not mince her words when she was asked on CNN about the president’s decision.
“He’s our president, and I would rather he not be taking something that has not been approved by the scientists, especially in his age group and his, shall we say, weight group ... morbidly obese, they say,” she said.

Nancy Pelosi claims to be a Catholic. Charitably interpreted, that means her grandparents were Catholics; possibly even one or both of her parents. But Pelosi has not even a nodding acquaintance with Christian doctrine. The latest example, via PJ Media, is revealing. Remarkably, Pelosi was addressing an audience of Christian college and university presidents and administrators. Is “chutzpah” a Catholic term of art?

After a brief, self-deprecating introduction, Speaker Pelosi launched into the religious pandering portion of her speech. Saying, “I can’t find it in the Bible” even though she claims she keeps “reading and reading,” Pelosi shared her favorite verse with an audience that consisted mainly of Christian college and university presidents and administrators. The verse, which “is supposed to be in Isaiah,” according to the speaker, is, “To minister to the needs of God’s creation is an act of worship. To ignore those needs is to dishonor the God who made us.”

What’s funny about this is not just the fact that nothing remotely like that quote appears in Isaiah or any other book of the Bible. More fundamentally, the sentiment is entirely wrong. 2,800 years ago, no one was worried about “the needs of God’s creation,” other than the needs of us human beings. Gentry environmentalism is a 20th century phenomenon. And left-wing Earth-worship (or, more properly, government crony-and-Democratic-Party-enrichment-worship) has nothing to do with Christianity.
But as we all know, the Left’s religion is not Christianity, or Judaism, or Islam–all of which are antithetical to key elements of the Left’s agenda. The Left’s religion is government power. Nancy Pelosi should stop pretending.

I’m a pastor, not a politician, and I’ve certainly had spats and disappointments with politicians from both of America’s leading parties. But it saddens me, and weakens the democracy millions of Americans cherish, when the party that once embraced Catholics now slams the door on us.

“It was just stunning to see,” Kristen Day, executive director of Democrats for Life of America, told CNA.

Day was referring to DNC chair Tom Perez supporting a Democratic mayoral candidate in Nebraska who had in the past embraced pro-life positions – and then the next day saying there was no room in the Democratic party for pro-life politicians.

“Pro-life Democrats are deeply concerned about this extreme position that the Democratic Party has taken and this non-negotiable position,” she said.

Not to put too fine a point on it, I am pretty sure that our immigrant friends are not here due to an Emperor decreed census. But the Church does provide solice and a safe place...whiich explains the huge turnout at the Spanish language Mass.

Then the Cardinal veers into a personal attack on the President --elect:

O Merciful Mother! Move the hearts of Americans so they make room for those who, with their hard work have given prosperity to their country, and touch the hardened heart of the new President-Elect who being a Christian – as he has declared – so he cannot see the poor and the immigrants as enemies but rather as brothers with whom he must be tolerant, generous and just.

I like the "as he has declared"part. Who does that remind you of?

Eye of the Tiber Strikes Again

San Francisco parishioner Colin Paekernick has been embroiled in fierce controversy after refusing to kneel for the consecration in protest of what he deemed “wrongdoings against women in the Catholic Church.”

His latest refusal to kneel came before his parish’s preadvent Mass last Sunday morning.
“I am not going to stand up to show pride for a church that oppresses people of the female gender,” Paekernick told EOTT in an exclusive interview after the Mass. “To me, this is bigger than Mass and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way.”

The Archdiocese of San Francisco issued a statement about Paekernick’s decision, saying, “The consecration is and always will be a special part of the Mass. It is an opportunity to honor our Lord and reflect on the great liberties we are afforded as Christians. In respecting such Catholic principles as freedom of kneeling, or simply standing or sitting if your back hurts or if you’re a wussy, we recognize the right of an individual to choose and participate, or not, in showing reverence during the Consecration.”

Paekernick’s pastor Fr. Kip Chelly told reporters Sunday afternoon that Paekernick’s decision not to kneel during the consecration is “his right as a Catholic” and that “it’s not my right to tell him he’s a complete jackass.”

In perhaps the most controversial of her statements, Pelosi said, matter-of-factly, that same-sex 'marriage' "is consistent with the dignity and worth we [Catholics] attribute to every person."

In a stunning indictment against Planned Parenthood two abortion executives have exposed themselves negotiating pricing for the marketing of baby organs harvested from abortion procedures. In damning evidence collected by The Center for Medical Progress Dr. Deborah Nucatola and Dr. Mary Gatter, both senior executives of Planned Parenthood, are each videoed discussing the illegal activity of providing vital baby organs to interested clients.

 Dr. Nucatola in Louisiana is seen sipping wine while bragging “we are very good at it” in providing high quality baby parts to those in the market to obtain organs or specimens. Dr. Gatter in a separate video is heard promising to also deliver organ specimens by using “less crunchy” methods of dismembering the body of a baby during an abortion.

 When the second video emerged a week later of Dr. Gatter of Planned Parenthood’s Pasadana and San Gabriel facilities, she was heard promising to deliver high quality organ parts by using “less crunchy” methods of slaughtering the babies during an abortion. She then quipped regarding the price negotiations, “I want a Lamborghini”.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday joined calls for a federal investigation into the California-based anti-abortion group that sparked the Planned Parenthood hidden camera controversy.

“Let’s have an investigation of those people who were trying to ensnare Planned Parenthood in a controversy that doesn’t exist,” Pelosi said Thursday in her first public remarks about Planned Parenthood since the first undercover video surfaced last week.

A long-time abortion rights champion, Pelosi dismissed accusations that Planned Parenthood has raked in profits from its fetal tissue donation program.  

“Planned Parenthood has said that they have done nothing illegal,” she said. “They do not ever charge, which would be illegal, for fetal tissue. They have only defrayed the cost of mailing that to someone, which is not breaking the law.”

Oh, and Diogenes is considered a founder of Cynicism. It is a different cynicism as displayed by the noted theologian but cynicism nonetheless.

At her Jan. 22 briefing Pelosi said she had "great standing" to speak on the issue of abortion, noting that she was a "Catholic and a mom of five" and asserting that it was "true" she knew "more about having babies than the pope."

"It is a scientific fact that human life begins at conception," the archbishop said in a written statement to CNSNews.com. "This has been established in medical science for over 100 years. Catholic moral teaching acknowledges this scientific fact, and has always affirmed the grave moral evil of taking an innocent human life.

“This has been the consistent teaching of the Church from the very beginning, a teaching already discernible in the natural moral law, and so a teaching from which no Catholic can dissent in good conscience,” he said.

“It is the obligation of pastors of souls to reach out to their people who have difficulty understanding and accepting such important teachings of the Church in order to extend to them true pastoral care and, where appropriate, to establish a regular dialogue,” said Archbishop Cordileone. “This is something I have always striven to do in the various ministries I have exercised as a priest and bishop, including now as the Archbishop of San Francisco. I ask for people’s prayers for success as I continue to strive to do this."
