Washington D.C., Apr 3, 2018 / 01:37 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan issued an injunction on Friday that blocked a Trump administration policy which prevented undocumented teenagers being held in federal custody from undergoing abortions.

The injunction is preliminary and the government can appeal. Chutkan also certified a class action of other pregnant undocumented teens who are seeking abortions.

Last March, the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Refugee Resettlement said that federally funded shelters could not provide or facilitate abortion services without permission from office director Scott Lloyd. The government is being sued over this policy in the case Garza v Hargan.

Last month, the American Civil Liberties Union released the transcript of a December deposition of Lloyd, in which he admitted that he had not approved any abortions during his tenure, nor did he believe that undocumented minors had a Constitutional right to have an abortion. The ACLU has referred to the current policy as “cruel.”

San Francisco, Calif., Jun 30, 2016 / 12:01 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Catholics and other groups that receive grants to care for immigrants are in the sights of the American Civil Liberties Union, which has filed a lawsuit against the Department of Health and Human Services.

The legal group’s recent lawsuit says that social agencies that get federal money to care for refugees and undocumented migrants from Central America should be required to offer contraception and abortion, even if they have religious objections.

Among the lawsuit’s claims: the federal government’s accommodation of religious beliefs violates the First Amendment’s prohibition on establishment of religion. It also claims a 1997 court settlement and later federal regulations oblige agencies with federal contracts to provide the coverage.

Douglas Laycock, a University of Virginia law professor, told the New York Times that he thought the ACLU’s claim is weak due to precedents of federal agencies granting exemptions in their spending programs.

The ACLU said it knows of about two dozen cases in the last five years in which pregnant girls, many of whom said they had been raped, requested abortions. About one-third of the unaccompanied minors are girls. Many were the victims of sexual abuse at home or during their travel to the U.S.

In several cases, when the girls wanted abortions, they were transferred to different agencies to obtain them.

ACLU lawyer Brigitte Amiri said placement decisions should be based on “what is in the best interest of the child.”

When in Danger When in Doubt, Run in Circles, SCREAM and SHOUT!

 The ACLU has found reported some troubling news, according formerly Great Britain's The Guardian:

The report finds that one out of every six beds in the country’s acute care hospitals is in a hospital with Catholic affiliations and that Catholic hospitals make up 15%, or 548, of the country’s hospitals. Those numbers attest to the sharp rise in Catholic control of medical institutions over a decade: since 2001, through a steady thrum of sales and mergers, the number of hospitals with Catholic ties has gone up by 22%. Many public health advocates regard this trend with alarm. At Catholic hospitals, all medical staff must follow a set of rules set out by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops that bar abortion and any products or procedures to induce sterility, such as emergency contraception or tubal ligations.

 Of my gosh! Only 85% of all hospitals do abortions and such things! We wouldn't want women to make informed choices as to where they will deliver their children, do we?

I wonder what the Anglican Hospitals in England do on such matters. Oh, wait...there aren't any?
