Feast of St. Pollio, April 28

From Catholic Online:

"Martyr. Pollio was a member of the Christian community of Cybalae, Pannonia, a province on the Danube, serving as a lector. He was put to death during the persecution launched by Emperor Diocletian. "

There is no St. Swineflu.

I checked.

Patron Saints of Sailors, Part I

Who is the patron saint of sailors? it appears there are several.

First up - St. Francis of Paula. Francis was a hermit, but also the founder of the Franciscan Order of Minims.

How did a hermit end up being associated with sailors? Probably because of this:

"In 1464 Francis wanted to cross the Straits of Messina to reach Sicily, but a boatman refused to take him. Francis laid his cloak on the water, tied one end to his staff to make a sail, and sailed across with his companions. Franz Liszt wrote a piece of music inspired by the incident."

Friday Abstinence

Well, what do you know...

I learned something new today having to do with abstaining from meat on Fridays. I knew I had to abstain from meat on Fridays during Lent. What I DIDN'T know was that the Americans are supposed to fast UNLESS they substitute another form of penance. This from a story about Bishop Conlon of Stuebenville, Ohio from The American Papist:

"Okay, technically, Catholics in the US are only allowed to dispense from the year-round Friday abstinence from meat if they substitute a comparable penance for it ... but in practice, the vast majority of Catholics have forgotten to even do this.

Bishop R. Daniel Conlon, however, has dispensed with the substituting ... and has instead brought back the simple Friday abstinence from meat in his diocese. I especially respect that he ties this sacrificial abstinence to witnessing for the unborn and providing them with concrete assistance:

"I am inviting the Catholic people of the Diocese of Steubenville to resume the practice of abstaining from meat on all Fridays throughout the year, but with a twist. I am asking that this be not only a penitential practice but also an experience of prayer and service. This can happen by connecting abstinence with our witness to the sacredness of human life. (In another section he says: Abstinence can also be service if we eat simple meatless food and donate the financial savings to the poor or to pro-life efforts.)

... The resumption of year-round abstinence in the Diocese of Steubenville will begin after this coming Easter, one week after Good Friday (April 17). Although the practice will not be a requirement of law, and failing to keep it will not constitute a sin, I hope every one who is old enough to receive Holy Communion and well enough to come to church will take it seriously. Our parishes, schools and organizations should provide meatless food at their Friday activities.

Catholics for Obama, Part XXI

In the most coherent argument I have heard so far, a cat explains why 53% of Catholics voted for Obama.

Catholics for Obama, Part XX

George Will may have an explanation as to why 53% of Catholics voted for Obama:

"Seventy-five percent of American "gamers" -- people who play video games -- are older than 18 and nevertheless are allowed to vote."

(CNSNews.com) - "Georgetown University says it covered over the monogram “IHS”--symbolizing the name of Jesus Christ—because it was inscribed on a pediment on the stage where President Obama spoke at the university on Tuesday and the White House had asked Georgetown to cover up all signs and symbols there.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the “IHS” monogram that had previously adorned the stage at Georgetown’s Gaston Hall was still covered up--when the pediment where it had appeared was photographed by CNSNews.com."

53% of Catholics voted for Obama.

Feast of St. Bernadette, April 16

St. Bernadette is, of course, one of the little girl to whom the Blessed Virgin appeared to at Lourdes.

When her body was exhumed thirty years after she died her body was found to be "incorrupt"; that is, free of decomposition. That's St. Bernadette in the photo above.

But (according to Wikepedia)..."In 1925, the church exhumed the body for a third time. They took relics, which were sent to Rome. A precise imprint of the face was molded so that the firm of Pierre Imans in Paris could make a wax mask based on the imprints and on some genuine photos."

St. Bernadette is the patron saint of sick people.

Catholics in the News

Happy: Captain Richard Phillips.

Sad: Nick Adenhart.

Amazing: Susan Boyle

More on Miss Boyle (from www.theanchoressonline.com):

"A lifelong Catholic, and one of the youngest of nine children, she cared for her aging parents while the rest of the family was out having a life. Her father died at a ripe old age about ten years ago and her mother died just two years ago. Miss Boyle has been in mourning for two years."

Feast of St. Tassach, April 14

I asked earlier if there were any Irish saints who did NOT know St. Patrick personally. A second question...are there any Irish saints who don't have alternate names?

From Catholic Online:

"Bishop, also known as Asicus. One of the first disciples of St. Patrick, he was a gifted artisan, creating for St. Patrick croziers, patens, and chalices. He was later appointed the first bishop of Rahoip, Ireland, and gave Patrick the last rites."

Catholics for Obama, Part XVIII With Update)

News flash! The Catholic Church is AGAINST abortion! And 47% of us feel strongly about it!

From Reuters:

"Vatican sources told Il Giornale that their support for abortion disqualified Caroline Kennedy and other Roman Catholics President Barack Obama had been seeking to appoint.

53% of Catholics voted for Obama.

UPDATE:
VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- A Vatican spokesman dismissed reports that the Holy See has rejected several candidates for U.S. ambassador to the Vatican because of their support for legal abortion.

"No proposals about the new ambassador of the United States to the Holy See have reached the Vatican, and therefore it is not true that they have been rejected. The rumors circulating about this topic are not reliable," the spokesman, Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, told Catholic News Service April 9.

The spokesman's comments echoed off-the-record remarks by informed diplomatic and Vatican sources in Rome, who said the reports appeared to be unfounded.

Feast of St. Brychan, April 6

Catholic Online says this:

"King of Wales, undocumented but popular saint. Brychan is credited with having twenty-four children, all saints."

Come on! Not a rotten apple in the bunch? I'm not buyin'...

According to legend, he was married three times. His wives were:

1) Prawst ferch Tydwal
2) Banhadlwedd ferch Banadi
3) Gwladys (although I'm guessing this wasn't her real name, just a nickname).

Bonus - he had sons named Rhydog and Cynog.

Make that St. Rhydog and St. Cynog.
