We Salute You, Archdiocese of San Juan!

The See of San Juan de Puerto Rico was canonically erected in 1511 as the Diocese of Puerto Rico on the island of San Juan. The Cathedral of San Juan Bautista was built in 1521, but was destroyed by a hurricane in 1541. It has undergone some restoration and shape changes since then. In 1924, the diocese changed it's name to the Diocese of San Juan in Puerto Rico.

Juan Ponce de Leon founded a settlement in 1508 and named it Puerto Rico, or "Good (Rich) Port". Christopher Columbus had already named the island after John the Baptist, so officially the settlement was called San Juan Bautista de Puerto Rico. By the mid 1700s, the settlement (Puerto Rico) and the island (San Juan) had changed names.

The Archdiocese of San Juan de Puerto Rico is the metropolitan see for the  Caguas, Fajardo–Humacao, Ponce, Mayagüez and the Arecibo.

The Cathedral is the second oldest cathedral Catholic Church in the Americas. The oldest? The Cathedral of Santa María la Menor in the Domincan Republic....
