Feast of St. Peter of St. Joseph Betancur, April 18

OK, it's a day late but it's really interesting. Peter de Betancur was born in the Canary Islands, and is the only Canarian saint! For a time he lived in a cave on the island of Tenerife (one of the Canary Islands).

He eventually made his way to Guatemala, where he enrolled at the Jesuit College of San Borgia to study to become a priest, but....he flunked out. So he became a Franciscan tertiary, taking the name of Peter of St. Joseph. Wikipedia says, "He visited hospitals, jails, the unemployed, and the young. Three years later, he opened Our Lady of Bethlehem, a hospital for the convalescent poor. Soon after there was a shelter for the homeless, schools for the poor, an oratory, and an inn for priest."

AND...

"He is sometimes credited with originating the Christmas Eve posadas procession in which people representing Mary and Joseph seek a night's lodging from their neighbors. The custom soon spread to Mexico and other Central American countries."

He was canonized by Pope John Paul II, who called him "first Canarian and Guatemalan saint."
